Marathon is just a magical place, so we were all excited to
get there. We headed out from Miami around 9:30am and were ready to get our “Keys”
on! The plan was to stop at the Island Grill in Islamorda for lunch, but as we
got there it was closed for renovations. We meandered down the road a bit more
until we got to one of LT and my favorite spots – The World Wide Sports
Fisherman and Islamorda Fish Company. Pulled in and belled up to power down
some good lunch and shopped a little in the store before continuing to our
house in Marathon.
It was Sunday and a fresh new week, the Keys were
getting a fresh new batch of guests. The amount of people heading south towards
Key West was starting to show. We got back in the car after lunch and pulled out
right in front of what seemed a trainload of cars. From WWSF we only had about
45 minutes until we would arrive, so this was going to be an enjoyable ride.
Not but three minutes or so into the drive and we all heard a loud screech and I noticed a Toyota what looked like
peeling out behind me and starting to head northbound. Then came the boom. It
was like a weird lapse in sound. A Jeep Wrangler had slammed into the rear of
the Toyota and catapulted it forward. The Toyota must have turned its wheel in
order to miss us. Needless to say, we were all very lucky as it could have been
us!
We arrived a little before 2pm. Check in was to be at 4pm,
but since we knew the lockbox code and knew there was no one there the previous
days, we decided to get in early. The place was located on Sombero Beach right
on the channel. The original VRBO had it placed next to the Sombero Beach Park,
but that was not the correct showing based on the address. Either way, the
place was really nice.
Unloaded the car and went straight to work. Fishing gear
out, poles up and lines in the water. Anna and Olivia drove to the store and
got some provisions to make it through the week. Shortly after, Thomas and I
drove to try and get some bait. Later we got in the kayaks and tooled around
while the ladies floundered in the pool. Everyone was somewhat spent from the
sun and heat and we all called it a night a little after 10pm.
