Day 7 – Hoapili Trail

The day started with a little fishing early in the am with LT. I purchase a large squid at Times (local grocery store) the other day and cut it up for bait this morning. I woke LT up at 6:30am to try and get out before the rest of the island got up. We fished for about an hour and a half before having Anna come get us. Each of us caught a handful of fish, but they were all relatively very small. We were really hoping for something more like snapper or grouper today.

When I got back, I woke up Olivia and realized it was a lot later than I thought – it was 9:15am. She was quite happy that she was able to sleep in today. Originally the plan was that all of us would drive out this morning to go hike on the Hoapili trail, but it ended up just being Olivia and I – which was perfect. Oli and I had ball. The trail/state park is south of Kihei, just about 2 miles south of Makena State Park – another amazing place.

Hoapili Trail is sparse and almost desolate place owned by the government and was used for many years as a bombing test site. It is said that there are still ordinances in the area yet to be discovered. Lava rock is everywhere, but the trail is pretty well groomed. The trail follows the ocean’s edge and you are constantly thrown magnificent views of the water and landscape. Not a lot of vegetation in this area, but for some grass, palms, dead trees and several creeping type vines or plants.

Oli and I walked the path for about 2 hours before slowly heading back homeward bound. Prior to heading home we did stop at a local clothing store – Maui Tropix and then hit the PHO Truck for a little vegetable pho for Olivia. See said it was incredible! We managed to get back by near our condo a little after 1pm.
