Stopped on our way in to Cabuya yesterday at the local Super and picked up some huevos. These local eggs have massive yolks. Anna boiled about a dozen hard boiled eggs a moment ago. Figured we would have them ready to eat if someone would get hungry during the day. Before the heat dissipated off the shells, all but two were devoured. Papi and the niños (children) needed their energy.
After our boneless chicken, we piled into our adventure mobile and determined we would head over to Mal Pais. The car is being returned on Monday, so we figured go exploring to the further reaching communities now and see what they have to offer. This way we will know if it will be worth the bus ride over later. There are two ways to Mal Pais from Cabuya. The long way is paved in most parts and cuts through several towns. It is a bouncy 25km from Cabuya. Big daddy opted to do the short way. Only 7km west. Simply turn left right out of our driveway and we'll be there in 15 minutes, as opposed to the other 45 minute drive. Wow…the drive started a bit bumpy at about 400 meters into the ride. No problem. We have a Toyota RAV4 – 4WD!!!
We crest our first hill only to see a very large hill up ahead. Wash outs and ruts 1-2 feet deep all over the hill. No problem. Bring it on!!! We have now gone about 800 meters or close to a kilometer. Asses puckered and teeth clenched we may it up the first hill. Alright all…..Family meeting. And the answer is….. turn back around and go the wonderful, scenic, and safer way. I know the picture probably does not do justice, but unless you knew the locals (which come to find out recommend not to drive that route, unless you do it with an ATV), we probably should not have been on that road to begin with.
We made it into Montezuma, halfway point to Mal Pais and decided to have a bite. All this non-training has really gotten my appetite fired up. We squatted ourselves down at a cute little Soda (restaurant) right on the beach. Anna had a wonderful looking Avocado salad and I had the daily catch – Snapper. The snapper was served with rice, potatoes, and a carrots & chayote medoly. Chayote is a pear shaped vegetable similar in flavor to a squash. Olivia had her favorite – Spaghetti with Butter. While we waited for lunch, Thomas decided to shimmy up a coconut tree and try a grab a free drink. Unfortunately, Thomas was not successful. A local watching Thomas climb the tree and reward him with one he picked. We cut is open and popped in a straw. It doesn’t get any fresher than that.
